NEW CENTRALITY
COMPETITIONS_E10_Main

Project: Revitalization of the Nyhavna district through new cultural uses
Location: Trondheim, Norway
Area: 2.468 sqm/m2 (Building) + 247.529 sqm/m2 (Study area)
Date: June 2009
Team: Modo

Concept:
This proposal aims to create a new cultural centrality in the Nyhavna District to enhance the unique character of the neighbourhood and to develop a new form of urban growth. The project brings together the existing uses with the new proposed ones and, stitches together, as well as complements, a heterogeneous urban grid.
The predominant character of this new centre is cultural: the area will be filled with art-related spaces —art galleries and a great public space. At the same time, residential and productive elements are introduced in order to allow for mixed uses and complement the cultural appeal of the area.
We are proposing a new cultural hub for the city of Trondheim linked to the historical central district, articulated from a large public space and complemented with mixed-use buildings. These new uses will introduce cultural spaces, residences and spaces for productivity activities in the area. The Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies will become a reference for research on efficient use of resources and its findings will be applied internationally.
The area’s character and singularity will be respected while opening new potential for future developments. This polycentric articulation will provide an opportunity for the city’s growth and the Nyhavna District can become its first new centre.
