Algemesí Market
Project: Algemesí Foodmarket
Location: Valencia, Spain
Area: 6.468 sqm/m2 (Building) + 2.194 sqm/m2 (Exterior facilities)
Date: May 2008
Team: Modo
Concept:
The Municipal Foodmarket, understood as a public place, is a key part of the cities’ structure.
Our project proposes a market with plaza that serves as an attractor of people and activities. The configuration of public space around the market allows different uses. This provision enhances the pedestrian routes in the area and reduces the impact of road traffic. The position of the plaza provides that in her various activities occur, such as the weekly market or concerts.
The market is divided into two floors above ground, where shops and complementary uses are located, and two underground floors of parking area.
The project proposes a contrast between the inner life full of colors, smells and sensations of the market and the relationship between the exterior volume and public space. The interior is generated through light understood as the essential element of the space. The light drills like a fluid the solid block of the building, releasing program and interior routes. The outer covering is a container for the light.
